The event traces its origins to 1853, when it began as a fall fair organized by the County of Sydney Agricultural Society. Over the past 170+ years, it has evolved into a significant showcase for local agriculture and community talents while maintaining its traditional character.

It was established as the Eastern Nova Scotia Exhibition in 1866.

The exhibition opens on Wednesday with 4H Day, which focuses on youth involvement in agriculture and rural life. Throughout the five days, visitors can observe various livestock competitions including light and heavy horse shows, as well as goat, sheep, and dairy cattle competitions. These events showcase the work of local farmers and the agricultural practices that remain central to the regional economy.

Beyond livestock, the exhibition features competitions in flower arranging, photography, vegetable growing, crafts, and baking. These categories provide opportunities for community members to display their skills and share traditional knowledge across generations.

The exhibition grounds on James Street have preserved much of their historical layout, with livestock pens, grandstands, and contest tracks remaining largely unchanged over the decades. This continuity helps maintain the authentic character of the event while serving practical functions for exhibitors and spectators.

The Eastern Nova Scotia Exhibition serves as both a working agricultural fair and a community gathering place, reflecting the ongoing importance of farming and rural traditions in the Antigonish area. The event provides insight into local agricultural practices while offering educational opportunities for visitors of all backgrounds.
